We are pleased to be able to offer you the opportunity to read for yourself
a very special piece of writing from Mrs Thelma Pickering of Napier who was just 10 years old the day the 1931 Napier Earthquake struck.
Mrs Pickering, now 85 years, wrote her "Recollections of the Hawke's Bay Earthquake"
on request of Mrs Barbara Faithfull a visitor from Auckland to the Westshore branch of the Women's Institute in July 2005.
The Napier Public Libraries gratefully received a copy of the letter and asked permission from Mrs Pickering to place it on this
website for public viewing.
Our heartfelt thanks goes out to Mrs Pickering for her strength and generosity when agreeing to let us use her story and to Mrs
Barbara Faithfull of Glenfield Auckland for encouraging and obtaining the recollections from Mrs Pickering and for editing and
producing the final report. Without her dedication to the project we would surely not have had the opportunity to bring these
recollections to the public.
